Bodega Berroja

Bodega Berroja
Basque Country, Spain
A sensual journey with unique Txakoli experiences
Surrounded by lush forests and breathtaking panoramic views lies Bodega Berroja. This charming, family-run winery is located within the protected Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve in Muxika, Biscay, Spain. Founded by the passionate and determined José Ángel Carrero Arketa, Bodega Berroja is a true delight for the senses.
Since its founding in 1997, José Ángel has made it his mission to demonstrate that local wines have the capacity to age over time and are not just meant for immediate consumption. He has achieved this goal with a magnificent collection of award-winning wines. He has also played a crucial role in educating a new generation of ecologically minded winemakers in the region.
Bodega Berroja specializes in Txakoli (pronounced "cha-koh-lee"), a Basque delicacy made primarily from the native Hondarrabi Zuri grape, which can be blended with other grapes. It's a bright and refreshingly dry white wine with a hint of Atlantic coastal salt.
Bodega Berroja produces a range of Txakoli white wines and a rosé. The white wines vary depending on the grape blend and the way they are aged and bottled. The Aguirrebeko is more fruit-forward, with aromas of lemon, white flowers, and honey. The Berroja, with a higher proportion of Riesling, brings notes of citrus, apple, and wet stone. Lento Latido (Slow Heartbeat) was a successful pandemic experiment and is a rich, complex expression of Txakoli.
Bodega Berroja practices sustainable agriculture and harvests only the finest grapes by hand. The winery is a spectacular destination, and José Ángel would be delighted to welcome you there. Dive in and sample his Txakoli wines!
