A heritage of quiet perfection: The unique Pouilly Fumés of the Domaine de Bel Air
Located in the heart of Pouilly-sur-Loire, Domaine de Bel Air is a family-run winery dating back to 1635, specializing in Pouilly Fumé wines. Today, siblings Cedric and Katia Mauroy, the 13th generation, continue the tradition, along with Katia's daughter Alexandra.
What sets Domaine de Bel Air apart is its humble approach, which allows it to quietly craft exceptional wines without putting itself in the spotlight. Its genuine care and expertise are reflected in every bottle, making the wines truly rare.
Pouilly Fumé, made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes, is sometimes overshadowed by Sancerre. Although both use the same grape, nuanced differences arise from site and soil. Sancerre tends toward a lean profile with citrus and grassy notes, while Pouilly Fumé offers a softer palate with notes of stone fruit and occasional smoky undertones.
The Domaine de Bel Air winery offers three different Pouilly Fumés, each defined by its soil. Their flagship, the Domaine de Bel Air, is an elegant blend of grapes from different plots and soils, distinguished by elegance and balance. The Cuvée Riquette and the Cuvée des Acoins, each from older vines and different types of clayey limestone, offer greater complexity and flavor intensity.
Pouilly Sur Loire, a magnificent Chasselas, completes the offering. Lighter than the Domaine de Bel Air, it offers a unique expression compared to a typical Swiss Chasselas, highlighting the estate's versatility.
Tasting this range is a pleasure, not to mention that these wines pair fabulously with a variety of dishes.
