Established in 1997, José Ángel embarked on a mission to demonstrate that local wines possess the ability to mature gracefully over time, not merely for immediate consumption. He has achieved this goal with a splendid collection of award-winning wines. He has also played a pivotal role in shaping a new generation of ecologically minded winemakers in the region.

Bodega Berroja specialises in Txakoli (pronounced “cha-koh-lee"), a Basque treasure, predominantly made from the indigenous Hondarrabi Zuri grape that can be blended with other grapes. It’s a bright and refreshingly dry white wine with hints of saline from the Atlantic Coast.

Bodega Berroja produces a range of Txakoli white wines and a Rosé. The whites vary based on grape blends and the way in which they are aged and bottled. Aguirrebeko is more fruit-forward with lemon, white flowers and honey flavours. Berroja, with more Riesling in the blend, brings citrus notes, apple and wet stone. Lento Latido (Slow Heartbeat) was a successful pandemic experiment and is a richer, more complex expression of Txakoli.
